Everything You Need To Know
Before Dental Implants
The honest answers to the questions our patients ask most often before getting dental implants.
What exactly are dental implants?
Dental implants are a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement “root.” Once the area has healed and integrated with the bone, a bespoke, natural-looking crown is attached. Unlike dentures, implants are fixed in place, providing a stable and functional result that looks and feels like a natural tooth.
Is the procedure painful?
Most patients find the procedure much more comfortable than they anticipated. We use local anaesthetic to ensure the area is completely numb, so you should only feel some pressure during the treatment. Any post-operative tenderness is typically mild—often described as similar to a routine extraction—and can be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does the full treatment take?
Dental implant treatment is a multi-stage process to ensure the best long-term outcome. After the implant is placed, a healing period of 3 to 6 months is usually required for the bone to integrate with the post. Once this foundation is secure, we attach your final custom-made crown. We will provide a specific timeline during your assessment so you know what to expect at every stage.
How long will my implants last?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution. While the titanium post is highly durable and resistant to decay, the longevity of the implant depends heavily on your oral hygiene and gum health. With regular professional maintenance and a good home-care routine, implants can last for many years. The crown attached to the implant may require replacement over time due to normal wear and tear, similar to a standard crown.
How are implants different from dentures?
The main difference is stability. Implants are fixed into the jaw, meaning they do not slip or require adhesives. While dentures sit on the gum tissue and can sometimes move during eating or speaking, implants function like natural teeth. This stability helps preserve the jawbone and provides a level of confidence in daily life that traditional removable options often cannot match.
